Feline Heart Health & Foundations We Support: Protecting the Future of Cornish Rex Cats
Learn More About Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Cats
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common heart disease in cats, often caused by a genetic mutation. Unfortunately, this mutation is becoming a growing concern within the Cornish Rex breed. HCM affects the heart muscle, causing it to thicken and potentially leading to severe complications such as heart failure or sudden death. Early detection and prevention are key to protecting the health of breeding cats and their offspring.
Our Commitment to HCM Screening at Kaylee Cattery
At Kaylee Cattery, we prioritize the health and well-being of our Cornish Rex cats. We are proud to be one of the few breeders in the USA that conducts annual HCM screenings for all our breeding cats. Here's how we ensure a healthy lineage:
Annual Heart Scans: All breeding cats undergo advanced HCM scans conducted by certified veterinary cardiologists.
Early Detection: Cats showing signs of HCM, including heart murmurs (a potential early indicator), are immediately removed from our breeding program.
Transparency: Many of our cats' HCM scan results are posted alongside their photos on our website for full transparency.
By taking these proactive steps, we aim to reduce the prevalence of this devastating condition within the breed and provide you with healthy, happy kittens.
